Ruben Bio PicOur community continues to lead in many areas. As one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country, we have a thriving tech community offering many jobs to our friends and neighbors. Our downtown is booming and we are attracting even more Fortune 500 companies. The Austin that we had just 3 years ago when we first started will not look like the Austin we will create together in 3 years. If we take this moment to look at this as a mid point of where we have come as a city and a movement, we have done a lot of work!

Just this year our team at Austin + Social Good has grown our Social Innovator’s Meetup community to close to 400 members, we have had consecutive sold out meetups around the topics of social innovation. We held our third Accelerator & Fast Pitch Event in October. We have helped over 16 social enterprise startups go through our program. We have raised over $20,000 to give away to these companies and much more of in-kind services from our team and partners.

In addition to the work we are doing to expand our social enterprise community we have taken our work into the schools, this past year we helped create the “Startup Superstars” competition alongside the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. We invited these students from Title 1 schools to come and pitch and compete at our 3rd annual SXSW event.

On the community side we expanded our work and pilot project “Work From Home Day” to Mobility Week for the second year in Austin with a great team of government committees and local businesses. We worked for 8 months behind the scenes and had the Rocky Mountain Institute select Austin as the lead implementation city for their innovative plan to ease mobility issues. We are committed to making sure we deliver on our initial promise to make a difference and cultural change for our community regarding this traffic, clear air, and mobility issue.

Our team has grown from just a few to a sizable staff all who have been working as volunteers in effort to help drive this larger vision we believe in forward. Austin will continue to grow, companies will continue to create profit, but what will our identity and legacy be in the next three years? Will we have set ourselves aparts and played to our natural strengths as a community to lead in this space? We as a team believe we can and are doing so.

This letter is written to you the community as a thank you and an invitation to continue to join us in this movement as we reach more people, show results and incorporate your innovative ideas to make our city the leading city in social impact.

In 2016 we are going to dig in even further, and invite you to become a part of our movement. In order to expand our impact and become sustainable as an entity we will need your support. Therefore our number one focus is how do we deliver the resources and tools you need to become successful and social innovators and entrepreneurs. What do you need in order to walk down this path? We have workshops, speaker series, meetups, conferences, online communities we will be building for you. This is an exciting time for Austin and our team. We know we have a lot to build but with your help we can make it happen. If you have attended one of our events, if you have participated in one of our programs, if you have been watching us from the sidelines seeing what this is all about, this is your invitation to jump in. Over the next couple of weeks and months we are going to be re-launching our website, publishing new content and leading off with serving you the social entrepreneurial and impact community in mind. Our team and I look forward meeting you in person, shaking your hand, getting to know you and your efforts so we can find ways to connect you to the people, resources and capital you may be needing to get to the next step.

Warmest Regards,

This year’s Social Good Accelerator & Fast Pitch was extraordinary, and the Google Fiber venue was the perfect setting as you can see from the image gallery below. Our Fast Pitch event was the culmination of a rigorous six-week business development program, where five different organizations focused on “social good” were coached and mentored to help strengthen their professional presentation skills and streamline their key messaging.

This year, we received a record breaking number of applicants, who each submitted a compelling two-minute video for the Fast Pitch Competition’s five available spots. The 2015 finalists included:

Half-Helen Foundation

IdealEthos     Legal Banzu

Prepify       recruitHER

Each team was selected for their unique business concepts that incorporated a significant social good component benefiting the local community. The Fast Pitch Competition was our big event for the teams to pitch their business plan in front of a live audience. A panel of esteemed judges, led by Monica Maldonado Williams and Bob Bridge, evaluated the feasibility and profitability of each competitor’s business idea. The winning prize, a crowdfunded $5,000 seed investment, went to Half-Helen Foundation, a company that works to preventatively identify vision and hearingrelated barriers in children by providing comprehensive screenings using advanced technology. Half-Helen was coached by Ricardo Guerrero of Digital Dynamo.

We owe a debt of gratitude to the Industry Experts who volunteered their time to coach our 5 teams, including:

Patricia Buchholtz from lookthinkmake

Ricardo Guerro from Digital Dynamo

Kevin Putegnat from Core Good

Billy Moyer from SOS Leadership Institute

Megan Winget from Conviviali Consulting

This is the second year for Mobility Week, where we work with our city’s top employers & employees to help you take alternative transportation to work for ONE WEEK to ease the damage done by our cars. Plus, what a great way to re-introduce yourself to this awesome city and maybe find something new to love about your commute in the process! That is why we are introducing a new video challenge this year to our Mobility Week promotions, and we call it … #LoveMyRide.

The idea is simple. If you’re not worried about driving your car (and all of the insane traffic happening around you) then imagine all of the new things you can look at instead! What if we all started to #LoveMyRide because of the new and interesting things it provides you?

What we’d like you to do is during the week of NOVEMBER 2 – 6, change your commute to get to work in any way OTHER than driving your car. Here are some ideas:

Try a RideSharing Service like RideScout
Check Out the Public Transportation Options through CapMetro
Ride Your Bike or Walk (if possible)

While you’re on your new commute, take in the city around you. Maybe you’ll see a new shop or restaurant to try. Maybe you’ll find a spot to volunteer your time that you never knew existed. Maybe you fall in love with your new fitness routine.

Whatever it is that makes you #LoveMyRide during that week, take a video of it and send it to us through any of the following Social Media channels:

We’ve done a lot of work on the traffic issue here in Austin, and a lot of that is thanks to the support we get from the community. It all began in 2012 when you told us that traffic in Austin was a top concern, especially its effect on our air quality (not to mention the time wasted in getting from one end of town to the other). So we started Work-From-Home Day to test whether taking a significant number of cars (over 10,000) off the roads for one day could have a significant impact on our air quality. No surprise, IT DID!

That successful experiment has morphed into Mobility Week thanks to the work of many great city and business partners here in Austin.

After a nationwide search, Rocky Mountain Institute chose Austin as its exemplary city for implementing their forward-thinking strategy to alleviate transportation woes, and made it official with a joint press conference held at Austin City Hall today. RMI was joined by Mayor Adler and other city officials to begin releasing details of their plan. RMI will work in coordination with groups like Austin+Social Good, The Butler Firm, RideScout and CapMetro to place a team on the ground in Austin to begin planning and implementation of their mobility plan.

Our hearts swelled towards the end of the Press Conference when the city personally thanked Austin+Social Good for their coordination with the RMI team and dedication to helping them learn about the great people & resources waiting for them here in Austin. For us, this has been the culmination to work we started 3 years ago when we first formed in Austin and asked the community what they would like us to fix. Check out the timeline below …

TIMELINE OF EVENTS THAT BROUGHT US TO RMI:

{September 2012}
First Social Good Summit where transportation was named Austin’s biggest issue.

{February 2013}
First official Work-From-Home Day organized by A+SG, which removed 14,000 cars off of Austin roads for one day.

{September 2013}
The second WFH Day was held with similar success.

{October 2014}
WFH Day expands to Mobility Week in coordination with Austin government and business partners.

{February 2015}
First conversations between A+SG and RMI introduces the idea that Austin is ready for this kind of initiative.

{July 2015}
After months of communication with RMI, A+SG & The Butler Group throw a daylong conference to give the city a platform to pitch the merits of Austin being RMI’s choice.

{End of July 2015}
RMI narrows down to 2 final cities.

{August 2015}
RMI makes another visit to Austin for meeting on logistics of working with our city.

The best example of this work is our annual Social Good Accelerator & Fast Pitch Competition. We chose 5 teams who are currently running for-profit Social Good businesses based on the 2 minute Fast Pitch video submissions they sent to us. Those teams were given personal coaches and mentors who guide our Social Good visionaries through a 6-week Accelerator Program focusing on Business Structure, Social Good Foundation, and Community Involvement.

After a nationwide search, Rocky Mountain Institute will choose between Austin and one other
U.S. city to implement their forward-thinking strategy on transportation.

Traffic in Austin is a problem. We’ve measured, studied, reported on, and complained about it – but what’s the solution? Rocky Mountain Institute thinks their strategy could put an end to common traffic congestion, and Austin is one of two cities currently under consideration to be the test subject for their innovative plan.

The Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) focuses on unlocking solutions that can be replicated and implemented in communities across the country with the help of local philanthropic support. They convene and collaborate with diverse partners—business, government, academic, nonprofit, philanthropic, and military—to accelerate and scale solutions that tackle our toughest long-term problems.

Rocky Mountain Institute LogoIt was through RMI’s interactions with community action group Austin+Social Good that launched Austin to their group of finalists. For Austin+Social Good (A+SG), the mission to relieve traffic in their home city began nearly 3 years ago.

“Our group founded in 2012 around the topic of traffic,” said A+SG Founder Ruben Cantu. “We began the Austin Chapter of the +SocialGood movement initiated by Mashable and The UN Foundation, by asking the community what was the biggest problem in our city that needed to be addressed. They told us traffic.”

A+SG connects regularly with the Austin community through their monthly meetup, which they use as a platform for brainstorming “Social Good” problems and solutions. Once initiatives begin to form, they turn to business and government connections in Austin who they know can get things done.

“We’re so lucky to be in a city where people are ready to dig in with us like Mayor Adler and County Commissioner Brigid Shea have repeatedly shown,” Cantu said.

Commissioner Shea has her own initiative in motion …

“Our other strength is that we stay connected to the global community as well through the +SocialGood network, which allows us to find partnerships like RMI,” said A+SG Committee Member Carina Boston Pinales.

A strong advantage to RMI coming into Austin through A+SG and other partners like The Butler Firm was their grassroots ability to motivate the community to the RMI mission and their intentions for the city of Austin. These teams also coordinated with the existing transportation models in Austin that could benefit from a partnership with RMI, such as:

  •         Interoperable Transit Data (ITD)
  •         Mobility as a Service (MaaS)
  •         Fleet Electrification and Optimization (FE&O)
  •         Smart Infill and Redevelopment
  •         Autonomous Vehicles

The RMI plan will look at traffic in Austin from the perspectives of infrastructure, new technology, community communication and cooperative ride-sharing programs to implement a plan that organizes and mainstreams transportation. If the model succeeds in their pilot city, it will become a model to implement in communities nationwide.

“We are thrilled to have to play a role in bring a solution to Austin to fix an obvious problem, and we look forward to continued partnership in this project regardless of whether Austin is chosen,” Boston Pinales said.

A+SG is a community-driven organization that connects with Austin residents, businesses, government leaders, and national influencers to facilitate Social Good solutions within the city.

They are a group of young activists, entrepreneurs, and change-makers who use technology and communication methods to put initiatives in motion that address our city’s top issues. They believe that change happens through bold ideas and persistence to seeing them completed.

By actively seeking the opinions of the community, they can help city officials spend more time implementing solutions that are the will of the people. They believe this is the future of fruitful Community & Government cooperation.
